From across the pond at Toronto, Canada: Thanks, Ben, for your insightful post. I have added you to my Twitter follow list. Ta, also, to Tom for his contribution to my collection of delightfully descriptive British idioms: "It's all swings and roundabouts."

Entirely chuffed, eh, to make your acquaintance. Alas, Wednesdays are the pint pot for a full quart schedule @benlocker @ABC_Copywriting @TourdeFrank ... better get going.

Very good, fact-based post. It's perhaps also worth noting that digital/SEO/modern agencies are often smaller and more agile, allowing them to respond more quickly and (sometimes) charge less.

The more unwieldy 'full service' setup inevitably involves lots of in-house skills that must be matched up with fee-paying clients in order to cover overheads, as well as client liaison staff who may not be as knowledgeable about SEO etc as the hands-on staff behind the façade. Factors like these can drag the agency out of alignment with the client's actual needs.

Brave and/or cost-conscious clients may decide they don't need all that and plump for a freelance, or perhaps a set of freelances (e.g. copywriter, PR, web dev, SEO). However, they then discover that they have to manage and co-ordinate a range of professionals who may not agree with each others' suggestions. It's all swings and roundabouts!

Thanks for a really insightful article Ben. I find the PR contingents of some client teams appear to be increasingly out of step. They don't seem to understand how fundamentally things have changed and that it's a case of adapt or die. I like the point about the online world allowing knowledge to surpass contacts. A welcome development in any area of business/life surely.
