I expect it's to do with audience. The ad was in The Times, so most readers would be English and - at that time - identify more with 'English' than 'British'.

Either that, or Ogilvy felt he would have had to have advertised for the second best copywriter in Britain - he being the best, and Scottish.

Who knows?

Interesting that Ogilvy was so adamant he wanted an Englisher - he was at Fettes and fiercely protested his own Scottishness (despite being born in, ahem, Surrey).

As far as old ads are concerned, it's not for writers but I quite like this one....

"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful.
Honour and recognition in case of success.”

It was for one of Shackleton's trips to the Antarctic

Oh, I’m not sniffy at all – I’m just gently mocking. If I worried about past standards, I’d be plagued by one lot of slave and sugar plantation owning ancestors, and another lot that wrote music for the blacked up Moore & Burgess minstrels. It was as it was.

That said, copywriting was one career that a significant number of women got involved in prior to the 70s. Dorothy L. Sayers and Antonia White are two women copywriters-turned-novelists that spring to mind.

Pointless being sniffy about past standards, because they were different. On gender, for example, women (except in clerical roles) in the creative workplace were not the norm until the 1970s. Read old ads for entertainment, not for enlightenment.
